What is Grounding?
Grounding is a practice that helps calm your mind and body by focusing on the present moment. When anxiety or stress feels overwhelming, grounding techniques can help you feel more centered and in control. By engaging your five senses, you can anchor yourself in the present and create a sense of calm.
How to Practice Grounding with the Five Senses
Before you begin, take a slow, deep breath in… and exhale. Let your body relax as you prepare to engage your senses.
1. Sight: Look Around
Name five things you can see around you. Pay attention to the details-colors, shapes, and textures. Maybe it’s the pattern on your couch, a plant in the corner, or sunlight streaming through the window.
2. Touch: Notice What You Feel
Identify four things you can feel. This could be the fabric of your shirt, the coolness of a table, the warmth of your hands, or the ground beneath your feet.
3. Hearing: Tune Into Sounds
Listen carefully for three sounds. It might be the hum of your computer, birds chirping outside, or the sound of your own breath.
4. Smell: Take a Deep Breath
Notice two scents around you. If nothing stands out, take a deep breath or grab something nearby with a scent, like a candle, lotion, or a cup of tea.
5. Taste: Focus on Flavor
Finally, focus on one thing you can taste. It could be a sip of water, a piece of gum, or even the lingering taste of your last meal.
Why It Works
This simple exercise helps shift your focus away from anxious thoughts and into the present moment. By engaging your senses, you create a mental break from stress and give your mind a chance to reset. It’s a quick, effective way to ground yourself whenever you feel overwhelmed.
